Diwali at home is not the same brief as a corporate hamper. The office gift has to please a person you do not know well. The home gift has to survive a house full of relatives, incense, and sweets, and still smell like the person wearing it when the guests have gone. This page is for that second job. The 2026 dates, and why they will move

  • Dhanteras: Friday, 6 November 2026. This is the traditional day for a new purchase. A bottle bought now is not a last-minute Diwali errand.
  • Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: Sunday, 8 November 2026.
  • Bhai Dooj: Wednesday, 11 November 2026. That visit has its own guide, because it is not a second copy of Rakhi.

Next year the new moon of Kartik will fall on a different civil date. The advice below does not depend on 8 November. It depends on a crowded, warm, fragrant house.

What to wear for puja and for guests

Apply before you dress, not after the silk is on. Alcohol and oil can mark a pale saree or kurta. Two sprays on skin are enough in a room of diyas; three if you will step into a courtyard. Do not add a heavy vanilla on top of agarbatti. The incense is already the top note of the evening.

Sandalwood and amber are the notes that belong here. They read as warm without pretending to be dessert, and they are still recognisable after a few hours of greeting people at the door. Who gets a bottle, and who gets something smaller

  • Parents and in-laws: a 50 ml eau de parfum in a proper box. It is specific without being intimate in the wrong way.
  • A spouse: the same bottle, with a note about how they actually spend the week, not how a advertisement spends it. See perfume for a husband if you are choosing for him.
  • A brother, two days later: do not hand him the same Diwali box again on Bhai Dooj. The Bhai Dooj guide is the distinction.
  • Neighbours and a large visiting list: do not stretch one idea into twenty cheap bottles. A smaller, honest gift beats a perfume that smells like the shop.

Order with the courier in mind

Festive weeks delay parcels. If the bottle has to be in another city for Dhanteras, order before you are choosing wrapping paper.
