Karwa Chauth is a long day and a short, formal evening. The people in the room are family, not a party. Fragrance has to respect a fast, silk that marks easily, and a circle of people standing near one another for the moon. Loud sillage is the wrong ambition.
This year, and the years after
In 2026 the observance is Thursday, 29 October, two days before the end of the month and a little over a week before Diwali on 8 November. If you are reading this in a later year, ignore 29 October and look up Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. The wearing advice does not change with the date. Diwali gifting, which follows soon after, is a separate page: Diwali at home.
What to put on, and when
Nothing through the afternoon if the scent reminds anyone of food. In the evening, when you change, one or two sprays on skin at the base of the throat and the wrist. Do not spray the dupatta or the lehenga; pigment and alcohol are a poor combination, and fabric holds the scent longer than the room wants. The dose rules are in how many sprays of perfume.
Choose a creamy wood or a soft amber rather than a sugary floral. Sandalwood is ceremonial without being costume. That is why a bottle such as Privé fits the evening better than a dessert perfume bought for the colour of the box. If the note itself is unfamiliar, start with the sandalwood guide.
If you are giving the bottle
A spouse’s gift for this day should be something they can wear again on ordinary evenings, not only once for photographs. Ask, or smell a dry-down, before you commit. The longer version of choosing for him is perfume for a husband. Hand it over before the fast day if you can. A courier on the morning of the 29th is not a plan.
